The coachmen
A progressive garage rock band formed in 1977 by John King (guitar and vocals), Thurston Moore (guitar), Bob Pullin (bass), and Danny Walworth, later replaced by Dave Keay (drums). Originally named themselves "Room Tone" to present an artsy image, but decided on the Coachmen after joking about all the garage bands with the name. This was Thurston’s first band. The members moved to New York two or three years prior and shared a loft space when in the band together. The Coachmen received very little recognition beyond all their efforts. The band would beg to play shows and received very little pay for each, making $20 on a good night and had to pay someone $25 dollars to pack up the gear at the end of the night. In 1978 Thurston quit the band to move peruse playing the music he was more interested in: punk rock. The band split up in 1980, making a comeback in 1997 and changing the name to J.D. Kind & the Coachmen to avoid confusion.
